Renault to Greet New Year with Compact Car ‘Pulse' | In India | Diesel Engine | Car News

Renault will launch its compact car ‘Pulse' in India in January next year to make further inroads in the fast growing Indian car market.

The French carmaker, which currently sells two models in India, is also planning to introduce two more cars next year as part of its plan to sell one-lakh units in India by 2013.

“India is one of the three key countries for Renault along with Brazil and Russia. The Pulse is designed and produced in India for Indian drivers...it is an offering in the premium compact car segment developed for the Indian market by our design centre in Mumbai.

The quick roll-out of products highlights our commitment to the Indian market,” Renault Chief Operating Officer Carlos Tavares told this correspondent. Developed on its partner Nissan's V platform, the car is equipped with a 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is produced at Renault's Chennai plant.

“With the production of the 1.5-litre diesel engine from this month, India is the third country to produce this engine in the world…we have an installed capacity to produce 1.5 lakh engines per year at its Chennai plant which can be expanded up to three lakh units,” he added. Renault made its debut in the Indian market with the launch of the premium sedan Fluence in May this year followed by its second offering, the luxury SUV Koleos, in September 2011.
